What’s your opinion on why this is?

Is it more that open source projects aren’t investing the time to build this out or is it a technical limitation ?

This is the idea behind the Funding module. We are proposing to use OpenCollective, Patreon, PayPal, and other fundraising sites to put buttons on D.o project pages. In a perfect world, there would be a way to add this info to the Project Browser. This all depends on D.o getting off of Drupal 7, but we can dream...
