Revenge of the WYSIWYG: Why page builders are the future of content authoring

Time Slot
Sun 10:00am to 11:00am (10/13/24)
Room
MGH 231

In our ever-evolving world of web development, page builders have become both a blessing and a curse. They offer the ability to quickly build a site and lower the barrier to entry for many non-technical users but at what cost does this advancement come? In a world once dominated by the no-code options of Wix and Squarespace, more mature offerings are now showing up in larger enterprise platforms.

Page builders have risen in popularity because they offer intuitive interfaces and drag-and-drop functionality, enabling users to design and customize web pages without the need for extensive coding knowledge. However, as with any technology, there are both advantages and disadvantages to consider and modern page builders are consistently in a tension between control and convenience. Are these tools truly empowering or just layering on complexity?

With the announcement of the Starshot and Experience Builder initiatives, Drupal is starting down the path of the page builder. What does this mean for the future of site building in Drupal? In this session we'll look at what the latest coming out of these initiatives is and how we can start preparing our sites now for their eventual release.

We'll also examine both success stories and cautionary we’ll discuss the lessons to be learned from a diverse range of options. We'll explore their strengths, weaknesses, the controversies surrounding their use, and look to the future of where they are pushing our industry. All the while we’ll continue to look at how Drupal can learn from and implement the best of these trends.
